Past Continuous. Es Baluard Collection - Bienal SUR Buenos Aires
Opening: June 27, 8.00 pm.
Location: EACC Espai d’art contemporani de Castelló
The exhibition “Past Continuous. Es Baluard Collection”, organised by the Institut Valencià de Cultura and presented in the Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castelló, is set forth as a journey in time which unites strata of memory, developed in a rhizomatic way, between works that allude to different social, economic, historical and emotional components, taking the Mediterranean as their epicentre, as the cradle of civilisation and counterpoint of the relationship between East and West. Return trips, thinking of the dividing of time and dystopia, a characteristic inherent in the latest reviews of the Es Baluard Collection.
Continuing with its objective of promoting the works in its collection and sharing them, on a transversal basis, with diverse interlocutors, Es Baluard enters into collaboration with the EACC of Castellón, following its line of exhibition scheduling centred on the presentation of museum collections. Es Baluard, the reference museum of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands, is constantly aware of its geographical coordinates as a challenge and an opportunity, both immersed in history and looking to the future, as a catalyst and an emitter of research and training proposals through its programme of exhibitions, activities and educational cycles.
As well as being a space and a living laboratory for the analysis and production of present-day cultural practices, the museum becomes a container for the traces and marks left by culture, the great archive of the tangible and the intangible, and the custodian of its heritage. Located in the city of Palma, since opening to the public in 2004 this museum of modern and contemporary art has preserved a reserve of over 700 artworks – which come from the organisms Ajuntament de Palma, Consell de Mallorca, Govern de les Illes Balears and Fundació d’Art Serra, along with lomg-term loans and donations from collectors, entities and artists and acquisitions made by the museum itself – produced between the late 19th century and the present day, and with links to artists who are from the ambience of the islands and/or international names.
Infinitude. Es Baluard Collection - Bienal SUR Buenos Aires
Opening: June 26, 2019, 12.00 pm.
Location: Centro Cultural Kirchner - CCK, Buenos Aires
After the last experience in the MAC of Chile in 2017, and the collaboration involving the work of Ana Gallardo at the CCE (Spanish Cultural Centre, Montevideo) in 2018, Es Baluard and BIENALSUR determined to publicise the Collection in a new phase highlighting the contemporary creative proposals of the works in it which have a bearing on the idea of Landscape and Sustainability.
On an island, the horizon is the constant reference point, the axis around which realities revolve, the pole of attraction where the end is the beginning and vice versa; it is the metaphor of distance or the geometry for the inner gaze. We come from an archipelago in the Mediterranean, a sea that was the cradle of civilisation over its history and in its present, a platform of cruise liners and migrant boats, of poetry and economics, of pristine landscapes or of hotel skylines, of nostalgia and of emotion.
Because of its actual, incontestable presence, and equally because of its omnipresence, vastness imposes itself as a dominant dimension before the landscape, with the safety of knowing that there is always something beyond, in the outside-the-picture, on the other side, that which we know exists even though we cannot see it: the unlimited.
Alongside vastness, continuous diversity, fleetingness and change are some of the data which define identity marks in landscapes and which therefore present themselves as challenges for a sensitive experience.
The problem of space – continuous, infinite, unavoidable – imposes itself on artists from different latitudes who receive it both to underscore it, in affirmative terms, and to reinvent it conceptually, or intervene on it, seeking effects and the most diverse aesthetical and political interpretations. Because it is the register of space and its violation, because it persistently lies in wait as a reference image to be affirmed or denied, defended, parodied or intervened on, what it cannot be, without any doubt, is neutralised: in it, everything from utopian dimensions to political assignations or demands are condensed, everything from the registers of visual experience to conceptual elaborations.
The exhibition «Infinitude. Es Baluard Collection» is made up of a selection belonging to the museum collection, made by Nekane Aramburu, its Director until March 17, 2019, and Diana Wechsler, Artistic – Academic Director of BIENALSUR.
Kosmos: the uncertainty
In this short film "uncertainty "sounds like the Tibetan singing bowl heard at the very beginning of the film to mark the end of a metaphorical nuclear explosion.
Twins still in their amniotic fluid announce our human condition, our compulsion to walk, move forward, run.
When everything moves, we go through the forest of emotions in a dreamlike way. But it is thanks to water and its light reflections, to its transforming power that the infinite “Kosmos” plays with our uncertainty.
